I'll have to think about the subject. Suspect a saint despite lack of a clear halo.

Meanwhile, does anyone else see "Lamant" written twice, at right angles to each other, with different 'L's & 't's? Shared work?

I see even more than two. When I turn my screen I see them in a few different places. Maybe more pictures from different angles will help. It's a really nice cameo though.

Yes. And the one written horizontally looks like "Lamant" while the one written vertically looks like "Lamont". :)

I found this gold filled pendant/brooch the other day, 1 1/2"L, marked F.S.G.F. Is the signature/letters on the back by the carver? Looks like 'Sco'. The pendant part is different, I don't think I've seen one with a hinge before. Is the cameo fairly modern?
    any information appreciated
    thanks for looking:)

Scognamiglio comes to mind first, although the writing starts awfully close to center for such a long name.

Cameo gurus-- I need help with a signature. I read this as Poinsignon, which I believe it correct. However, in researching, there are several Poinsignon cameo engravers. Does anyone have an idea to which Poinsignon this signature this might belong? Poissingonon cameo.png

Hmmm her face looks much like Bronwen's....Erato? I think that was also a Poinsignon?

She's awfully lovely and that's a stunning frame.

Yes, the frame is beautiful and the carving is very nice. It is for sale, but I am on the fence about it because it is a bit pricy.

    What a memory Mirana has!

Added to Pepper's example, we can compare 3, which all look like the same hand to me.

Suspect they are all the work of the M. Poinsignon of 111 rue de Turenne. Albert is recorded by Forrer as working in hardstone.

I re-read this thread with interest last month so I had a refresher. That flower cameo is so delicate and lovely! Definitely a match on those signatures.

I just added this guy to my Pinterest board with portraits of gents:

    Any ideas on the reverse?

I can see how it could be. Not a name I recognize, unless the first name is Kosta. Shell engravers are so maddeningly meagerly recorded.:confused:

No, think the auction was over by the time I saw the listing, but I like him too. The collar reminds me of portraits of Byron, so wondering if this guy was another free spirit, with his exposed throat.

Had the awful realization this morning that something just won a couple of days ago in an English auction may be liable for Trump's 10% tax on UK goods. Already getting hit with an assortment of fees for this, that & the other. Could be an import duty as well? Had to buy a bunch of diamonds to get a cameo I really wanted. No idea how rules apply to antiques not being imported for resale. Then there's the weak dollar/unfavorable exchange rate. Not the best time to buy. Pendant supposed to be Georgian, but shell cameo, which auction house 'specialist' assured me is hardstone, is probably 16th century/early 17th. Didn't want to pass it up.

The Germans call that a "Schillerkragen", a Schiller collar, after Friedrich Schiller, the German poet, philosopher, historian and surgeon. Another free spirit.:)

I'll put it in the Show & Tell thread, if I ever get it. The single auction house photo is not the best of the cameo itself, focused more on the setting. It would be considered a blackamoor piece, but not one that's en habille. It takes advantage of the multiple color layers this as yet unidentified (by me) bivalve mollusc shell affords.

Right now I'm having waking nightmares about its getting snagged in Customs & never getting out. Have only once had anything arrive from overseas, in that case a book, that required payment of duty on delivery. Carrier was USPS & a personal check took care of it. This time the carrier will be DHL, & I have absolutely no idea of what to expect. Internet sources tell me something like this would have been exempt because it is over 100 years old, but no longer. And tariff is assessed on country of manufacture, not where it is being sold from. The auction house does not state in its listing where they think the piece was made. :nailbiting:
