There’s that turban! I’ll have to look up the Fair Circassian and the Fair Laundress. Never heard of either of them.

    Haha, a quizz/poll :joyful:
My vote is top left and bottom right (modelled nostrils and fine hair carving)
Edit to add perhaps the bottom left too:cyclops:
    A guess only ;)

Great story! At least, you managed to convince him (and educate at same time, KUDOS!):woot::)

Jivvy the research is my favorite

I have to add top right. The weakest one of the lot. Even knowing Schmoll had off/early days, I thought it was too weak to include... but. I'm adding it. :joyful:

She always looks so terribly distorted to me and I have come to think of her as Melt Face. :joyful:

OK, we won't wait for bluumz. This one:

And think also this one (bottom left):

    upload_2019-9-21_13-5-47.png

But any one of them could have been from his hand. His ladies, like the one that has been broken away from her background, often have a rather flat face. Scrolling through my Schmoll photos, it is evident he had a preference, not exclusive, for darker shades of shell.

I didn't ask the price on any of them - he must have had at least 10 with cameos at the show - but bet he gets good money. I should demand a cut of the profits. :joyful::kiss::kiss:

This one is a challenge to photograph, & I'll have to make more attempts to capture the back, which is 'scratch signed': F Negroni/fece (feca?)*/Roma. When you know what it says, you can find it in pic:

    Negroni F portrait 1C.jpg

Negroni got an unpleasant surprise when he worked his way out to the back of her hair; he ran out of white layer. What looks like the 'aura' (my word) on some hardstone figures is the rest of her hair cut down into the brown. She is wearing a decorative comb.

    * Usually you see fecit, or simply f. Not knowing Latin, I don't know if this is a legitimate, grammatically correct form, for this traditional way of indicating the named individual made it.

Good shot! And that is for sure an unusual scene :woot:
Loving bad pics in some listings, I’m used to correct the over exposed with my google photo phone app to get a better idea:cyclops:;)

Think the difference was more that seller, like me, probably leaves camera on automatic. Camera did a great job with the dark background, but to get that right the cameo figures got overexposed. I put the cameo on a glossy, off-white, sheet of paper & used light from window. Compared to the paper, the cameo is dark.

Cupid's right wing really stands away in fairly high relief. I dithered about buying this one, because I don't really collect 20th century, but proportions of figures was so good, detail had to be better too. Very happy with it. :)

Sorry! I've been kept busy with work and some home redecorating.
(I would have said top right and bottom left.)

Test your knowledge. The auctioneer has described this intaglio as being Hercules. What do they see that makes them think it is the hero? What are they overlooking that tells you it's not?

Eros is the only other one I know who has a lion skin?

You're on the right track, but Eros is typically buck naked, unless some wisp of fabric with no visible means of support is needed to protect delicate sensibilities. Can you find me a picture of Eros/Cupid wearing any kind of skin? There are many other elements in the scene that give clues to ID. (If it helps: he is not carrying a spear; that is not a dog.) :)
