Just as long as they're not passing celluloid disease around!

My latest acquisition. Not as fine as the recent examples shown here but I love her. A depiction of Raphael’s Third Hour of the Day.
The setting is gold colored but marked 900 which I assume is 900 silver. So perhaps gold gilt?

She's quite nice & has a sweet demeanor. I think I have at least 5 of her, of varying quality.

Now that the cat is out of the bag, I wrote them & supplemented their info on this:

Gold washed silver may be more accurate.

Not all of mine are cameos:

A locket with an enamel painting on the unglazed side of a porcelain cabochon, which makes the matte black background really contrast with the figure.

    Gentleman Cameo

This dapper fellow showed up in my mailbox this morning. It is a shell cameo with the background cut away and glued to paper. He is under a glass dome. The carving is lovely, especially the moustache, and the artist did a wonderful 3D carving. 20220209_164650.jpg 20220209_164904.jpg

Thanks! My sister found it for me. It was listed as a miniature portrait in an online auction, not a cameo. Now on I am using that as a search phrase, too.

He's really excellent. Portrait cameos of private individuals have been underappreciated. Interest seems to be picking up, though. Portraits of women should be valued more highly; they're much rarer.

Yes, I agree. I really like the portrait cameos. I have two female portrait cameos to share. The first one carved by Neri. It is hard to capture in the picture, the carving of the facial muscles and bone structure is so well done. Truly a sculpture, not a flat image.

The second is unsigned, but it is beautifully executed. I am intrigued by the two women in the cameo. I have tried unsuccessfully to identify them, likely they are members of an affluent family, not royalty or peerage. I think the frame is a later addition and may be the cause of the crack. 20220210_133729.jpg 20220210_134227.jpg

@Bronwen please would you mind enlightening me about this?
It is some form of early plastic or resin I think.
It’s marked Weil or Weir or Weib?
Google leads me to unrelated pages:rolleyes:
Just interested in any history :)
    Thanks so much!

The final letter looks like the German eszett, which is similar to a double "s." If so, the word would be Weiss in our spelling.

Here is an article about the letter:

It really does look like some form of plastic, as you mentioned.
