I never did, either. I had one in bad shape, had some kind of defect, and over time, it actually cleared it up. I have only oiled that one.

Hi guys. I'm on the run, so quickies:

I think you are spot on.

Any cameo riveted together is going to be man made material This looks like glass to me. Up to you if worth setting.

Looks like a rendering of La Vague. Noto did the subject repeatedly, but this is not his.

Following up on another old post about cameo signatures : Michel. I found Michel today in Annuaire et almanach du commerce 1862, just above our friend Mouhe.

Was looking for a names to match to other cameo signatures.

I was in the right place at the right time today! Walked into a charity shop just as the lady was emptying a jewellery box into little plastic bags. Lots of little goodies including this large 5.5cm cameo.
I’m struggling to identify what she is made of . I thought wood but up close it is flat and shiny with no grain. It’s brown, not cold to touch and made of two separate parts. Long pin but not silly long so Victorian?
@Bronwen please can you tell me if she is a somebody or just a pretty lady?
She is very dirty so any cleaning advice would be welcome!
    Thankyou for any thoughts.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Might it be made of gutta-percha? (Or maybe without the hyphen: gutta percha.)That is a very early type of plastic from the 19th century. I have never held a piece made of that... just guessing. Others will know more.

A pretty lady; there are none of the attributes of anyone identifiable.

@Figtree3 is on the right track. It is gutta percha, or, I think a little more likely, Vulcanite/Ebonite. They are related substances. Results of Google searches suggest that gutta percha has become the generic term for all of them.

Good to know that has become a generic term.

Thankyou!. Looking online vulcanite does look to be the closest.
    Is it possible to date?

My first thought was vulcanite too. It's made of hard rubber and turns brownish like that with age.

Any thought on this one please? Not my photos, nor am I buying but thought it looked interesting. Some sort of plaster or ceramic with the white underneath? Does the clasp date it I wonder? Just idle curiosity :)

Agree that it looks like a painted ceramic or plaster...?

1970s costume is my guess. The hardware is odd, but I've seen it before. German maybe?

    Hello

Cameo stick pin query. No idea what this stone is, or the gent portrayed is a known historical figure.

Metal looks like high carat gold, but i haven’t tested it yet.

    thanks

Gold setting for sure. The cameo might be bisque porcelain; Wedgwood made some that look similar.

Hello everyone! I am quite new to the world of cameos and I am SO glad to have stumbled upon this forum. I am learning so much going through the pages. (On page 107 currently!)

I only have one cameo on hand so far (2 more on the way), all of which were bought prior to seeing this forum. I probably would have bought something else had I stumbled upon this thread earlier, but that’s another topic altogether…

Anyway what do you folks think about this? How old would she be? It is about an inch, and has a sign (I think).I will upload the photo of the signature later. Thanks! D83A6BCC-4552-44FB-B738-922FC5937A35.jpeg
