    That is a fantastic cameo!
...But I'm not seeing Queen V... she looks more like a generic Flora/goddess to me...?

Thank you! :joyful: The carving was done and signed by Lamant. I love the details he put into things like the swags, the tiny toes and the fat ankles. I posted her back on Jan 1.

The portrait is based off these 2 etchings from the time of Victoria's 1937 coronation. It took a bit of research to find them, but I'd an inkling it was her before I went looking.

hi @Bronwen! Wondering if you could please help me date this cameo my grandma gave me. She’s 94 and has dementia so I’m trying to piece together the origins of it. The pin on the back is longer than the brooch and has “9ct lined” on it. We live in Australia too if that’s relevant.

It might be a bit before Bronwen checks in so be patient. :) That's a very sweet thing you're doing with your grandmother's beloved pin. I hope you wear it occasionally! She looks mid-century to me.

I certainly don't know as much as Bronwen but I'm going to say that it's first half of the 20th century. A generic "pretty lady" cameo.
I'm sure Bronwen will be more specific!

I agree with bluumz and mirana. A pretty lady cameo from the 1950s or so. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Thanks everyone! That rules out it belonging to her mother and more likely a gift from my grandfather. Excellent sleuthing everyone, very much appreciated!

Hi all. Finally feeling reasonably functional after a prolonged period of impairment that has included a little time in the hospital followed by an outbreak of shingles (I only had the 1-shot protocol, not the newer 2-shot one) in the arm where the IVs were.

I did check in here just enough to see that lots of sound guidance was dispensed by other members who are being too modest about their knowledge & skill. I can't really add to it, just give it my endorsement.

While I was in the hospital, received a cameo won in an English auction that I somehow managed to snag despite being completely enervated in previous weeks. I was drawn by the quality of the carving, even though the subject is an unidentified English matron. Felt there was a chance it would be signed.

    Lucas A D lady 1A.jpg

Was disappointed & a bit disbelieving when I could not, in my hospital bed, find any markings. Didn't spot anything when I was cleaning her up, either. (Think I'm going to have to go after stubborn bits in deep places with a needle.) Then, last night, finally really examined her, under good light with magnification, and...

Think there really can be no doubt that this is Albert Dürer Lucas, son of Richard Cockle Lucas, who was known for his cameos, among other sculptural work. The V&A has a number of pieces R.C. donated to them & others can be found in auction listings.

The only artistic output by Albert I could readily find on the internet are paintings of flowers & trees. He was clearly a master of working in shell, but I found no recognition of this. Indeed, the auctioneer missed it in this case; the name & date are very lightly incised.

Very surprised to find that Julia Kagan did not pick up either elder or younger Lucas in the list of masters appended to her book on British gem engraving. Forrer picked up Richard & his portrait medallions in the supplement to his Biographical Dictionary.

You can learn a bit about Albert & Richard here:

I would like to get in touch with this group to let them know about Albert's cameo work & to ask if the lady can be identified. They may know a portrait in some other medium. Who knows? Could be Albert's mother. I'm not joining Facebook just so I can reach them. If you're on FB & would care to, please feel free to steer them to this post.

The cameo arrived with a fitted box but, sadly, has been removed from the brooch that once held it.
