I was indeed wondering if this was the case. It seems that it was taken out, and both ends bent together. :(

It probably fell out. That happened a lot with base metal roll-over clasps. If you think the brooch is worth it you can salvage one from another cheap brooch.

Or just leave it as a C clasp; that happens all the time.

It is a molded polymer/plastic cameo that is then painted. There are similar versions, as you have seen. As others have said, it is a piece of costume jewelry.

Yep, yep, yep & yep. Agree with all that has been said. And those who claim not to be experts do themselves an injustice. Have seen her many times over the years. She seems to be more a copy from shell cameos of an earlier time, rather than a new design contemporary with her making.

Not that it matters much, but any idea when that would have been?

Stylistically she's pre-1930, but I would have to guess late 1940s, earliest, for the making. Fifties probably reasonable.

Because whoever painted yours took more care. The other one looks that way because the nose has been recontoured by paint.

    That's better than I expected.
I learned a lot from all the feedback, so this was a useful purchase :)

Thank you, and all others for the info  The brooche might not be valuable, but your help definitely is!

I'm so happy you've recovered and are with us again!

I had a loss in the family proceeded by assisting in hospice care and various other things going on which meant i took a break from all the online favorites. I like this site so much that after the break I knew catching up would be daunting but I'm willing to get back into it again now. :D

Your Lucas piece is stunning!! What a lovely treasure to get during a trying time. I love the details in her clothing and hair. I'm definitely going to go back and read more about these carvers. :bookworm:

So glad to have the start of your return. I'm sure Antiquers is not the only thing in your life that has been on hold. Some people evaporate from the site & no one comments or wonders aloud, but you have been missed.

Intaglios it looks like, but very beautiful. Honestly looks like she's got enough tiaras that we can all have one.

    And some of those gowns.

And that honkin big gold chain!! :woot:

I think I see a mix of cameos & intaglios, but mostly intaglios. There's something amusing about this being part of a royal jewel collection but set with 'souvenirs' of a trip to Italy, just like other tourists, except on a grander scale.

    I wondered at this:

the bracelet with a so-called cameo of Prince Christian (VI) Frederik (signed Pestrini of Rome)

What is 'so-called' about it? Not actually a cameo? Not actually the Prince? There were several gem engravers in the Pestrini family; this was probably Pietro or Clemente.

Queen Mary photographs rather similarly to the current Princess of Wales, I thought. I did love many of the dresses & so many of the pearls are positively luscious. Would have liked a better view of the 'Midnight Tiara'.

Midnight Tiara -same here. Those old Royal collections have some really nice rocks and other bits.
Queen Charlotte had the only emerald set I've ever really wanted to try on. (I look lousy in green most of the time, and yellow gold isn't my thing.) The Tower Collection won't kick loose, alas.
