Can anyone decipher this signature?

Judging by my (limited) knowledge of Ct, it's much swankier and tidier than that beach - is there even such a place (Muffie would be horrified)

There is a Westbrook, Maine on the shores of Highland Lake. Could be more of a rural lake scene than ocean.

 

Not too many submarines in rural lakes.

Parts of CT have ocean front (really most "Long Island Sound front" until you get closer to Rhode Island. Then it's ocean, with waves) that have great beaches, good beaches and some basically no beach, needing stairs down to a very narrow and rocky spot. You ain't gonna walk there even with sandals.

Almost all of the nice sandy beaches are either town or state owned and maintained. And those are available for public access.

Yes, a waterfront house, depending on how close to NYC, and, of course, how big, can run anywhere from $400,000 on the east side to over five, ten million.

On the west side, five million to over 50 million.

But, no, I doubt very, very much that pic is in CT.

I've vacationed at a timeshare right on the beach in Westbrook, CT and there was a small rocky island that we could wade to at hightide. Westbrook is not far from Old Lyme and its art academy. I joined last week, and this is the first time I've been able to give any input. I love this web-site!

Yes, Westbrook is a nice place. Sort of in between fancy and friendly. The theater - THE KATE - was founded by Katherine Hepburn. She had a home in Westbrook and donated quite a bit to the town, as she also did to Hartford, where she was born and raised.

 

Hepburn's family home was washed away in a terrible hurrican/cyclone.

This is getting very interesting - I have a painting by Will Howe Foote, an early member of the Old Lyme Academy and teacher...

"Foote returned to the United States in 1900, and came to Old Lyme the following summer. In 1902, he was hired as an assistant to Frank Vincent DuMond, the director of the Lyme Summer School of Art. Foote continued to teach privately in Old Lyme even after the art school moved to Woodstock, New York..."

So, it's an area well know for plein air arts - I'll dig up my painting - it's a nice one.

Just returned after several hours.
I didn't think a submarine. But I don't think it's Westbrook, CT, or even Westbrook.
HOWEVER, our latest newcomer - LibraryLady - above - explains that, if it is Wtb, CT "there was a small rocky island that we could wade to at low tide." which would satisfy most as what shows in the painting, no matter where it is.

Her family home, not Kate's, in a borough of Westbrook, was wiped out in the 1938 hurricane. That's the one her Mom always said was storm proof. But the 38 storm was pretty tough. I remember my brother crying like a baby because we lost two huge elm trees on our property.

 

Yes! Salt Island and a few named rocks are out there. I googled it, and it seems to me it could be in Westbrook.

Not meaning to make fun of the painting, is that the way it sounds?

I've read accounts of that storm - absolutely made me grateful to grow up in SoCal with earthquakes - 'til I was at work on the 108th floor in San Francisco in '89, watching the Bay Bridge flap around. Big difference between a ranch house and a skyscraper!

 

Unlike the Pacific, (I think) there are tons of rocks and sand bars all over the Northeast. Often looks odd with a whole bunch of people standing way the heck out there, when the water's ten feet deep closer to the beach.

Anyway, Jolly thought that word was "westbank." IMHO we have been influenced by the west, and that makes me think we're pushing the envelope a bit and converging on Westbrook, CT. Though it has been entertaining discussing one of our iconic leading ladies, and I won't bet over one dollar (US) that the pic's not in CT. I don't think it is.

Scout, I'll take the NE storms any day over mid-west tornadoes, AZ dust storms or CA earthquakes.

Shortly after your major disruption of the '89 World Series I took a ride north of SF because I was looking for some sunshine. Found it OK, and, not sure where it was exactly but I pulled into a seaside parking lot and got out to look around. Felt a couple of shivers when I looked at an official sign saying, "YOU ARE NOW STANDING DIRECTLY ON THE (whatever) FAULT LINE."

Then took a walk down to the beach. A really big, beautiful one. Got closer to the water and met another big sign that said, something like, "SWIMMING NOT ADVISED. STRONG UNDERCURRENTS AND SIGHTINGS OF SHARKS." That was not a temporary sign, it was a large wooden one maybe 10x6.

Not disparaging the left coast where it's almost always "another beautiful day" but do like the right coast where, if you don't like the weather, you just "wait a minute."

 

Thanks for the responses. I was really hoping to pin down a name, then the place might be readily apparent. I guess the question now is do you think this is a piece by a listed artist, a student or a known regional artist?
