I found this bowl suitable for a certain purpose and on the bottom was a sticker that said "Aynsley England circa 1885".
There are no markings whatsoever on the bowl. It's fine with me if it isn't Aynsley or even old but I like to know about things.
    Across the base it's 2 7/8 " (7.3cm) and across the top it's 6" (15.2cm).
I looked at 25 pages of Aynsley at Replacements, Ltd and several ebay sites but no matches, although I did see a very few pieces somewhat similar. 20190901_161210.jpg 20190901_161247.jpg 20190901_161520.jpg 20190901_161604.jpg

I'd think the date is fine. I'm dubious it's Aynsley though.

Is the design distinctive of that period ? Why dubious ? Any thoughts on another maker ?

Lots of Aynsley in Canada. At that date, it would have had a stamp on the bottom. I have seen earlier Aynsley pieces with an impressed AYNSLEY, but that would be a few decades earlier than this. IMHO a slop bowl from a tea set, late 19th, early 20th c and probably one of the Staffordshire factories. It may be that other pieces from the set were marked.

I found 2 exactly matching plates (didn't buy them). On the back of each were terribly faint impressions. I did my best to photograph them in the store. Here's the results. Without some high-tech enhancement I think they're inconclusive. I thought at first one said "Germany", then I thought the other might say "Aynsley". Good grief - seeing them now I think I wasted my time. 20190904_143225.jpg 20190904_142633.jpg 20190904_142645.jpg 20190904_142713.jpg 20190904_143123.jpg .
