I found these 2 beauties at a local thrift store today. Has anyone seen anything like them? I googled 'carved relief baby's face' but didn't see anything like them.
Are they hand carved? Are they rare?
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

How neat ! They sure look hand carved to me. Im wondering if these might be part of a set called the 7 deadly sins ?

They look like putti (each is a putto). What's going on with the backs? Is there plaster residue or...? Putti_synop_2.jpg

You really have to keep the alcohol away from that central putto in the first relief. I've seen him in that state before.

The one on the left looks like it is pyrography, with a copyright symbol?

The writing on back is price in sharpie from thrift store - $3.95 each!
They are 4 1/2" square x 3" thick. The back is cotton or cardboard? Something soft that they had been glued? to and when they were removed that is what stayed stuck to wood

The price says $3.95 R (R stands for red - at thrift store each day certain colors are 1/2 price)

Not with the hangers nailed into them.(LOL) Chalkware does NOT like nails. Cute, whatever they are.

If the white showing on the back is the underlying material, then I would have to agree with plaster.

If they are definitely wood, I wonder if they might be sand casting forms (used to make molds for cast iron).

It seems odd to me that they both appear to be looking off to the side. Makes you wonder what they're looking at.

That's what I thought I was seeing too. So that's sorted.

That is my suspicion, plaster or other molded material, & the reason I asked about the appearance of the back. They look solid head on, but one pic shows what you would expect to see if the heads are molded & being held in the wooden frames:

Yes, he tumbled onto another thread. I'm very fond of him, inebriated as he is. After looking at as many similar carvings as I could find on line, I concluded the lower one, which used to be for sale by a London dealer, is by the same hand & quite possibly a companion piece. The composition must have been a known one:
