I found this yesterday at a local thrift store (along with a very cool rolling stones poster). At first I thought it was a carved elephant, which I've seen before. But looking at the tail I realized that this may actually be a pig!
Any ideas on what this is or for? Is it just decorative?
If you look at 2nd to last photo, it appears to be 1 piece of wood & not one with the top part glued on.
    It measures 12" w x 14" H x 7.5" W
    Thanks for any help!

    Hi,
Neat piece but looks like a calf to me not a pig. The tail looks too long for a pig.

The heads above are boars, so a piglet makes sense. But, there's also an Indian ox on there, so it's a bit odd.

I'd guess Indian pig. Maybe Sri Lankan pig.

India doesn't do domestic pigs, they're anathema to both the major religions. Other than on Goa, of course, which is mostly Catholic. There are some indigenous wild boar though.

I saw domestic pigs pottering around very happily in Rajasthan ... and a quick Google suggests pigs are a "growth industry" in India.

They're used for loos, yes, but they're not exactly eaten. Anyhow, those are boar heads.

I see a calf supporting the box. The boars & bull on the box show the carver was capable of making a pig look like a pig. The face/ears on the supporting figure look juvenile bovine to me. Think the tail has been looped up as a practical matter of not having the end hang down between the legs, where it would be vulnerable to being snapped off.

Phillippines makes sense. I went to a Filipino wedding recently. A WHOLE pig, roasted. Yum.
