IMG_0917-min.JPG Does anyone know the appropriate term for a cameo with two figures facing each other? It's my understanding that jugate cameos feature overlapping profiles facing in the same direction versus examples like this that face each other. Thank you in advance for the help.

Not a word with which I am familiar, but looks like it applies here as well:

I don't think jugate is the correct term for this type of cameo. The "jugatus meaning joined" element of the definition means that this example is not jugate as the portraits are not joined in any way - they do not overlap or touch each other. I am wondering if there is a term for the face-to-face style.

    The correct term is 'confronted'.

Thanks so much, Bronwen. I think it depicts Mars and Venus - does that sound right to you?

    "Conjoined" might be worth consideration.

    "conjoined and confronted"?

When it comes to descriptions of the position of heads/busts, have never seen 'conjoined' used in the literature about engraved gems. One in front of the other = jugate. Facing each other = confronted. Back to back, often with backs of heads touching, = janate (like Janus) Only the frames connect these two; you could say the frames are conjoined if you were writing a detailed description.
