Featured Carved Wood Monkey Men

Bought these from an estate. 2" tall. Look nicely carved. Ani idea on origin or wood used? Just don't look at the dust, I need to clean them a little better.

 

Kind of looks like you've got two "see no evil" figures.....the others weren't there?? "Speak" and "Hear"???? Can't guess as to the wood, but hand carved.....

 

Looks more like Speak no evil to me.

 

Aquitaine and Bakers, these were the only 2. Is this bamboo?

Are these considered netsuke?

 

No. They have no holes in the back for hanging.

 

Thanks Bakers. Are these just carvings or oriental in origin?

 

I'm not sure. There's no signature carved into the bottoms.

 

I've had a number of similar items that came from China as tourist bits that fortunately the original owner documented origin. Most of the ones I had were pretty small. I can't tell you the wood.

 

Looks like boxwood to me, so probably chinese

I think you've got speak and see, as there are differences in hand positions over face

They look quite well handled, so I don't think modern
