Featured Carved wooden box, maybe Japanese?

    I have gorgeous wooden box with very detailed carving that I would like to learn more about. I feel like it might be Japanese. It is definitely old. If anyone knows anything about it I would be grateful. Thanks for looking!     That bird image in the front is a ceramic shard. Shard jewelry was very popular in the 1980s and it would not surprise me if this box was from the same period. More likely Chinese?

    Chinese sherdware, but I think older. The box looks earlier than the stuff in the 80s.
