The cautionary tale is that I should not have rushed.

Does not appear to be made by, nor signed by G. S. Allen as the label on back said. Saw the label on back, did a quick search and thought I had a great buy.

Also the one bottom shows rust, that, in my rush, did not even turn over. Hubby was waiting...

Idea on age-- 20230104_105822.jpg 20230104_105846.jpg turn of the century? Gather not worth much?

Actually I see G S Allen at the crest of the wave on the right.

I have seen very similar bookends at sales. Now I will have to actually pick them up and look for markings.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Does the bookend on the right have a different marking than the other? Maybe the title? I'm seeing -RINER on that one. Maybe MARINER?

I have a pair of these, too. Mine are more crudely cast than yours, and the 177 on the back (surely the 'style number') is harder to read, so I'd say yours are earlier, but I can't put my hands on my books on bookends (sigh) to find anything about possible dates. I CAN confirm they are both marked GSAllen on the lower right. From the estate on an antique dealer with an interest in books, probably bought in the 1990s but certainly made earlier; the tag still on them says "cast iron bookends $45"

They are both the same, but I had to wet it down to see it was the same. Hard to see.

Thank you so much everyone. Well imagine my surprise to read your replies! I really debated posting these at all, but said let the experts confirm my suspicions. So glad to see I was again WRONG! So now the Cautionary Tale is to always ask the Antiquers experts when in any doubt. Think I need new glasses. Can anyone on Worthpoint give me the pricing info? Cannot remember the users here that have it.

Would you guys sell as is, or should we add some felt to the bottom of the uncovered one? TIA.

I would leave it as is as found. And say that in the listing. That is just my opinion.
