Good morning. I am pretty sure this contemporary painting is just a charming watercolor but someone went to the trouble of double framing it under glass. I actually like the work. There might be some gouache mixed in. Does anyone want to take a shot at the signature? I believe it is probably an Asian artist due to subject matter. I have tried Choe Wou and similar searches and google keeps taking me to David Choe (I wish). Came from an estate in North Georgia. Owner was moved into assistant living and does not remember. Sight is 17.5 20.75 in. IMG_1185.JPG IMG_1186.JPG IMG_1187.JPG IMG_1188.JPG IMG_1189.JPG IMG_1190.JPG IMG_1191.JPG IMG_1183.JPG

I'd be cautious here. Lots of works to be found by "Korean artist" Hoe Won on internet but no biographical information and signatures vary.

Agreed with Debora.... Watercolor on canvas is an oddity....

I think these may be a better class of factory painting. I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't come out of a US military PX in Korea.

If you thin down acrylics with enough water they can look like this.

My husband paints, he often does watercolor on canvas, he likes the look. But I agree, thinning down acrylics will have a similar look :)

According to a couple of sites on the web, a Korean artist named Hoe Won is discussed in this book published by the Smithsonian Institution:

Undiscovered Art from the Korean War: Explorations in the Collection of Chester and Wanda Chang
Authors: Taylor, Paul Michael, Merrion, Trevor, Waugh-Quasebarth, Jasper, and Pontsioen, Robert. 2014. Washington, D.C.: Asian Cultural History Program.

Academia.edu claims that it's possible to download the 64-page book from their site.

I didn't try it, since it required a login and might require payment. The book is fairly recent and I didn't find another place to view it online.

Google Books is the other site where I found that an artist with that name is featured in that book. However, they don't have full text online, due to copyright restrictions.

Ha! I was right. A PX artist. Only snippets but enough information...

Great! I didn't manage to get Google Books to show even that much. Used to know how to use it well, but maybe they changed something.
