Chinese porcelain jar...new? Maybe a little age?

Picked this up at a thrift store price so not worried about losing any money on it...

9.25 inches (23.5 cm) high, about 7 inches in diameter at the widest point. 4 character mark in red on base, that although appears handwritten, is messy/not clear. Not sure if the dirty interior is fake dirty or not. Has a wooden lid that fits pretty well. 4 characters written in black on the reverse side from the flowers...peonies I think. Maybe @Couch Potato Wannabe can have a go at a translation?

Any chance this has any age on it? Early to mid 20th? Brand new trying to look older?

Can't read the Chinese, but seems much nicer than average.
