I noticed that one of the links included in one of the previous posts on pith paintings that I cited above does not work anymore. Here is the updated link, which provides a good discussion of the nature of pith paper and its use in 19th century Chinese drawings -

"Rice paper" turns out to be a not very specific term for any soft, tissue-thin paper as well as other types of Asian papers, including pith paper.

"Paper made from thin layers of pith cut from rice paper trees, Tetrapanax papyrifer cultivated in China and Japan or from Aralia papyrifer cultivated in Thailand. The pith is cut in spirals to form long ribbons. The exposed cellular structure of the pith gives the paper a unique spongy structure. Rice paper is stretchy when wet and brittle when dry. It will crack when heated and is easily damaged by abrasion. Rice paper was popular for Chinese watercolor paintings in the 19th century. The delicate, porous textured paper is also used for artificial flowers."

Paper is also made from rice straw, and rice straw is used as a decorative additive in "rice straw kozo paper" from Japan, which is made from the inner bark of mulberry.

"Rice paper" can also refer to edible thin sheets made from various flours.
