I was wondering whether or not this powder keg or bomb was from the civil war or possibly the revolutionary war period. maybe clues from the pictures like the type of nails used, type of wood, spout etc. might give a hint?
The powder keg or bomb has the following features:
Mid section not including the spout is about 9 1/8"
    Length is about 11 1/2"
End circle diameter is about 7"
Top metal circle diameter is 1 1/8'
    Mid section perimeter is about 30 7/8" - 31"
End section perimeter is about 27"
Wooden handle length is about 3 1/2"
Wire height that the handle is attached to is about 3 1/2"
Thank you for assistance in this matter. Rob

Pretty sure that nobody wanted to carry a wooden bomb around by a handle.

General purpose liquid carrier. Could be kerosene, beer, or bourbon. Circa 1900.

Definitely a strange find. I suspect Springfield Arsenal may have something to say. @springfld.arsenal

Might I add, you'd be the life of the party walking in sloshing that thing around! :jawdrop::eek::hungover::hungover::hungover:

I’ve seen them described as Civil War ambulance water kegs, I suspect they are as Terry says, general purpose.

Not for gunpowder since it has iron or steel on it, I’m pretty sure wood powder kegs wouldn’t use material that could spark.

The "@ and then the member's name" means that an email was sent to that member in hopes they will respond to your questions. Not a link for you to use to "get in touch with them".

As several knowledgeable people have told you - it isn't a bomb and wasn't used for gun powder.

An example of typical small black powder keg, with vines used as hoops.

Your container contained a liquid. It even has the "air hole" under the spout to facilitate pouring the liquid out. You wouldn't want to be filling & emptying gun powder thru that metal spout.

You can read this article that clearly states WHY gun powder wouldn't be in a cask with metal bands:

Too bad the link gets highlighted to the person asking the question. Most said it with uncertainty and to reiterate what they say will not keep me from my research. I like to know the whys, so challenging knowledgeable people can provide more information.

Any one else who is knowledgeable in barrels agree that this was made circa 1900s rather than the civil war era? Thank you. rknarr
