You’d get good info if you attended a Civil War show and let the vendors there inspect it in person. Web forums have their limitations. Here you are getting info from folks who on average are a little more knowledgeable than laymen, but not usually specialists, and maybe that works for you. What you plan to do with it may govern how much more work you do, if you plan to keep, keep researching. If you plan to sell the marketplace will judge and very little you do will make any difference in the outcome.

I believe you that I would get good information from attending a Civil War show and let vendors inspect it in person. I believe you the forum has people looking for answers like myself and want to contribute in some capacity rather contributing their thoughts and views or knowledge. You are most likely a specialist because someone went to the trouble of sending you email on advising this subject matter of mine. I think I have gathered enough information from this forum and another forum to put together a reasonable description of this barrel based on similar responses. My dad passed away and he has lots of interests and I have become members to lots of forums to try to educate myself on his interests. My mom was overwhelmed and just wants to give his stuff out for free. However, I took over to try to get a few dollars on some of his stuff to help my mom in down sizing his stuff.
He was a police officer, Vietnam marine doing radio and passing information from printouts up the chain of command and in the National Guard in engineering like blowing up bridges, taking out bombs, building bridges etc... When he retired, he received a commendation metal for his service. Thank you for the information on this barrel. The only part I need to verify is the time period. Rob
