    Hello

I bought this clay teapot. I think it's English but I haven't seen anything quite like it. Closest I can find is 18th century Redware teapots, but they're not quite right.

The deco is printed on, and it's glazed inside. No markings, height is 13.5cm to top of lid.

    Thanks

Pratt ware style, one of the Devon factories probably. Late 19th, it is indeed transfer and British. Some of the fancier ones are ascribed to Christopher Dresser as a designer.

What an interesting shape with its straight 18th C style of spout. Somehow it doesn’t quite look like Prattware to me because the body looks coarser and even the printing less precise. In the style, yes. Must look in my teapot book.

Might be the same maker as this, which I need to do some digging on.

Nothing in my teapot book except the earlier redware examples sans printing. The carafe above appears to be Prattware but somewhat degraded which raises the question of whether the teapot, too, has lost the crispness or density of its decoration through use. And perhaps the body too.

I've a few Pratt Ware bits, they do get worn. Soft body and not glazed. I do like the fact that mine has that mismatch transfer.

Odd name. There's a type of tropical pitcher plant called a "monkey cup". I wonder if that's where the name originated.

The Asian Pitcher Plant, or Tropical Pitcher Plant or Nepenthes, can be found in its natural habitat in the tropical regions of Asia – mainly Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore and New Guinea. The name Monkey Cups comes from monkeys occasionally drinking the fluid found in the pitchers.

Well that's interesting, never heard that term before either. Google does bring them up so learn something new every day (if you're lucky:))

I'd been thinking of them as barber bottle types.

Yup, some of the Dresser designs are Watcombe and/or Linthorpe.
