The cloisonne dragon and phoenix(I think it's a phoenix) seem to be laid over another layer(the red layer) that is dimpled and has bamboo and a flying swallow - gives it a 3D effect. Is there a name for this? Unmarked that I can find. Any ideas how old? I picked it up because I love the colors and the cloisonne work seemed pretty good. I think it's probably on the newer side given the decoration - but what do I know? Japanese? I think? Thanks for any input. About 8" tall.

Your 'under layer' is just the base metal under clear red. The metal may be silver.

That makes total sense - thanks Terry. I'll look into testing for silver.

Ginbari - the vase is Japanese, at least in style.

Thanks much Ruth! That does seem to be the term that I was lacking. Very interesting!

    Hi Aaron,
You've got two different techniques going on in that beautiful vase. The underlayer is basse taille, where a pattern is engraved into a metal then covered with a layer of transparent enamel. Over that is the more familiar cloisonne technique, where wire compartments are laid on a surface, then filled with colored enamel. A third common method, that I don't see here, is champleve', where the base metal is carved out and the enamel fills the depressions. There is also another method called "Ginbari foil", but I don't think that is what you have here. I've over-simplified that, and it gets confusing, but there are lots of images on the internet. Once you understand the construction process, it's easy to ID which one (or more) of those it is. I've seen the deep red transparent enamel like yours described as pidgeon's blood, also Akasuke, but I don't know how accurate those are. I'm much less familiar with the popular collector's terms for dec arts.
