OK kidz, today is the day, thankfully it's lot #7 so i can lose early and get on with my day. :hilarious:
I would rather have the chest for sale today than the Cogan chest next week at skinner, even though Cogan chest is a better example, better condition & better pedigree, why? SIZE! If you have never been up close & personal with this furniture, the first thing you notice is, it's VERY large, it's also VERY heavy, built to last for centuries (mission accomplished!) and unless you live in a very large house with very big rooms, the Skinner chest above will DOMINATE an average size room.

    Everything crossed for you, James.:)
I got lost in totally wrong images when Alex started talking about the maker's centre bottom fancies. Still can't get them out of my mind. My apologies to the maker (and his centre bottom fancies).:sorry:
Better join Jivvy in the jewelry forum.:shame:
    Now that I understand.:)
And I agree on the architectural meaning of pilasters.

Yeah, the thread kinda got lost there over those ebonized turned decorations, it would be great if original, which these are clearly not. Course, it doesn't have an "all original" price estimate either which is where i came in!
This chest is rare in that it has but 1 drawer and therefore smaller than the "usual" sunflower chest. I suspect that fact will drive much interest later this morning, 28 bidders are registered for this piece on liveauctioneers platform alone.

As you explained, those can be replaced by decorations which are in keeping with the style and period.
They wouldn't be period of course, but antique furniture has a history. These chests were used daily, and often moved from room to room and house to house. Things get damaged, lost, and replaced over the centuries.

Exactly, and considering these applied decorations were glued on with animal glue, any original decorations that remain is almost a miracle after 300 years.
Some do though, that sunflower chest at Christies in 2011 had most of those ebonized decorations intact, it also had hideous price tag, 482k!

OK, Hammer was $13,000. + BP = $17,550. out the door
That was fair and about what i expected. I'll have to wait another day for a sunflower chest. I'd like one but not at 17k especially one that needed a bit of work, minor work granted but still, it ALL counts in the end.

The search to me is almost as much fun as the having, so now you get to look at more gorgeous sunflower chests.

That is often the best way. But finding an unknown hidden piece of a rare type of furniture can't be easy.

If anyone has the gift it’s James. He has pulled off a couple astonishing buys in the year I’ve been here and I’m sure many more in the past.
