Can anyone tell me anything about this copper box. My pops thinks it something special. :wideyed: It has a hinged lid, on the top I believe is the signing of the Declaration of Independence. THere are no makers marks anywhere. It measures 5 1/2" by 4" by 3". Thanks for taking a look. I have been googling photos and pages but not found anything like this. copperbox.jpg copperbox.jpg copperbox1.jpg copperbox2.jpg

This may be the scene that your father is thinking of.

Yeah chess piece wouldn't fit. My vision is terrible but now that you mention chess I do see it!! Thank you. Any thoughts on the age?

Quite old I would think with that riveted copper

I'm sure someone else will know more though

Try and have a look on all 4 metal feet for a possible mark

Or a bit of touchy feely, perhaps that's what he's really pondering :)

it's a nice box , but seeing the lock isn't real....leads me to think it is pretending to be something older....

Looks like a chess match - gentleman's club, pub, or coffee house - 1760's to 1810's? can't tell if front left man is receiving a hand-off from player on right (chess piece or cash?) or if he is patting the player's knee. Also wonder what man on far right front is ogling? Original could be a Punch illustration maybe? have fun - cool item!

Your friends are German, and a later than the declaration I’m afraid (the chap in the middle has tell-tale facial hair). Still a very fine box!
