I'm thinking this qualifies as what seems to be referred to as a "naive" painting? Would that be correct?

    Approx 14 inches across.

Also curious about what it is painted on? Masonite? (Last pic shows close-up)

Was a thrift purchase. I quite liked the way the mountains were done, at it is kind of quaint, what do you think? All opinions welcome.

Looks like beaverboard. I think the painting is amateur which is a bit different from naive. I suppose it really is just a matter of mincing words though.

I have a friend from high school who suffered brain damage in an accident. She's painting as therapy and her work is very similar to this. I've been at pains to decide what to call it as well. It's not really what I'd call "naïve" but there must be a term.

Can we still use; 'Folk Art'?

That might be what I was thinking. My brain is always fried on Monday - back to work.

It is definitely a little "folky". Maybe "amateur folk art"?

Hmmm..... I think that may be repetitively repetitive..... ;)

I really don't see folk art in this.

In trying to think about what folk art is, I decided to do a little research. One trend I am finding is that the definition of folk art includes some aspect of cultural and/or artistic isolation. Traditionally, folk art was produced by artisans separate from the mainstream art world, often in physical isolation from mainstream society as well. This strict definition is getting harder to meet and the definition of what folk art is has become blurred. However, to me, so much of what is labeled as folk art these days just doesn't pass the test.

This article here seems to explain it better than most I have come across.

I agree with the article. In hindsight, the only thing a bit "folky" to me was the use of that thick beaver board or whatever you call it. I don't think this qualifies overall, though. Probably "amateur" is the most accurate. Great link, by the way.

    Thanks!

I think I'd call it an 'amateur painting." None of the other terms I can think of seem to fit.

That said, it's a charming piece!

Naive style, not a naive piece is my understanding. Naive would be faithful to all elements, but not necessarily on depth - the whole piece is one flat plane, with no recession or indication of mountains being any further distance from the people or house. IMO

I like this style a lot!

If that date was 1860, not 1960 we'd be lining up to praise this as early American Naive/Folk art.

But it's not. It is 1960.

    Maybe once it's antique......

Personally I like it too exactly for it's...dare I say...naivete.

    Hey, skeezix

Don't know if you remember me from oldforum, but I remember you...

I recall a discussion on what was shockingly ugly to some and beautiful to others.

So, hey! Nice to see you :)
