20250313_185600.jpg 20250313_185616.jpg I have a table and chairs set I just bought and I'd like to find out when it was made and what wood it's made from. From reading past threads with comments from Drew who I hear is the Cushman expert my guess is pre 1942 because the plate is not oval? I'd love any info about my table and chairs!

Yes, last year of that rectangular tag, pre 1942. The 1130 indicates a 1941 introduction (1st numeral tells the year . . . 1 is 1941. The wood is Northern yellow birch with a russet stain, and looks like a good original finish. Nice looking set. I'll look up the model number and get back with any further details.

Thank you so much for the detail! I really appreciate it.

I noticed that one of the captains chairs has a crack at the bottom of the V cut out. The crack does not seem to go all the way to the bottom of that back piece. Does anyone have advice on that - is it likely to crack more? Any precautions or repairs that are advisable?

Further info; Table is the 'Woodstock' table made from 1941-43. The chairs are the 'Landgrove' side and armchairs, also made from 1941-43. As to the crack in the center splat of the chair .. I'd leave it be unless it gets loose.
A nice modernist flair to this set with the angular straight lines. it has that Herman DeVries look (He was Cushman's designer in the 1930s up to about '47. His work put the company on the map in terms of interesting, sometimes quirky shapes that collectors do indeed like. I would simply clean carefully and wax. . that original finish is a good part of it's value. Enjoy !

Here's a circa 1938 photo of the finish being applied at Cushman. It was a seven part process that they were very proud of, resulting in that distinct golden glow of their pieces. [IMG]`

Oh gosh, I don't even want to think about it being valuable, haha. I wanted a nice sturdy table for me and my family and found this at the consignment shop for $500, and when I did a little googling I realized it was antique and thought it was cool to have a table that's been around so long. Thanks again for the information and advice!

Not antique yet (100+ years). Use it well. That's what it was meant for! All the wear will become part of it's history and memories for your family and possibly others. :D

That table will last your entire life and beyond. In addition to being attractive, I imagine that the chairs are comfortable. Comfort was taken into account with design in those days. Also nice to have those leaves at the ready if you need a larger space.

It's a really eye catching set. I think you made a good purchase. :)

The chairs are really comfortable! Surprisingly so. My younger kiddo tried all of them and picked the one he thinks is most comfortable

I just thought it all felt really sturdy and looked nice :hilarious: and to get a table and chairs from IKEA or wherever would be way more than $500, felt pretty decent for the set!

Table, six chairs. . worth every penny of $500. Cushman of the 30's-40's has a collector, if not cult following (a member) ! Quality is superb, modernist-Colonial design literally created by Cushman.... soon to be copied by the industry. Here's my 1941 Cushman 'Woodstock' cushioned armchair. Marley loves it to ![IMG]
