Saw this old looking painting and I can't figure the signature out for the life of me. The frame is quite beautiful.... or was beautiful at one point. Can anyone help out? I didn't buy it as $100 was steep for me not knowing anything about it.

I see "Avil Heide" -- which I don't know if it is a real name, but that is what I see.

Another clue... When something looks like it was painted in haste. Lots of quick brushstrokes as if clock was ticking. This one also has damage mid-stream.

    I hear you.

Aaaaand I believe you are spot on with this piece.

BUT. I take issue with the "red flags" -- they eliminate a lot of 19th century landscape painting.

That said, I don't know if this is a "glorious old-time frame" or a "cheap frame made to look old." :bored:

Whenever I have a frame question, I rely on some of the furniture folk here. :joyful:

Yes , but red flags can be turned to green flags on closer inspection.....:playful::playful::rolleyes:

It's the combination of "red flags" that warns one off.

I question the value of a "red flag" checklist.

Personally, this piece hits ALL my red flags. :bored:

I agree. I'd say the red flag is that it lacks soul. That spells factory to me.
The composition, with the stream straight in the centre, is also strange.

I'm more bothered by the damage. :hilarious:

Maybe, in addition to all the other things we wish people would post, we should add: are you buying for personal pleasure or resale?

For personal pleasure, I think most people would do better on ebay than thrift stores.
