My cousin found this ring last week on farmland about 5 miles from me.
He has permission from the farmer to metal detect and the agreement is they split any valuable items 50/50.

    Dates from about 1650 to 1720 22carat

Words are "I LYKE MI CHOVS TO WEL TO GHANG"

(I LIKE MY CHOICE TOO WELL TO CHANGE)

Its now subject of a treasure trove inquest, either way he either gets full market value tax free or if the museums don`t want it it is returned.
    Estimated value around £1200.

    Love it!

LOL, I almost did this a couple years ago! One of the guys from the TV show "Mud Men" (originally on the History Channel in the USA, but now seen for free on YouTube) does mudlarking tours on the Thames foreshore. Only reason the idea fell through was that the tide was not going to cooperate during the few days I was in London.

Learned something new today, thanks! (I had always thought they were posey rings.)

Me, too! I often browse them online but they're just not, and never will be, within my budget.

I found a modern, man's gold ring with black star sapphire on Martha's Vineyard in 1972. We were walking a path to a beach and it looked like a pop top from a beer can. The dirt around it was so compacted it was hard to chip out. No one claimed it so we got to keep it. After the divorce, hubby moved to Hawaii and gave it to his new son with his second wife. I was always miffed that our older son didn't get it since it was me who found it.

    GaleriaGila Hola, y'all!

Davey! I recognize that ring. It belonged to my... uh... great, great, great, great, great *counting on fingers* great great great great great grandfather who ... who was an Indian who traveled back with the pilgrims and learned English and... that inscription was about how glad he was to have made the trip! Amazing! After all this time...

Isnt it funny that I love the IDEA of detecting , but when I was given one I found the actuality of it very tedious ?!? I still love to read about others doing it though !

    Cool find, Davey!

Walking down the stairs in a two-story office building a few years ago, I found a 14K gold earring.

Turned out it was mine... somehow it came out of my ear and fell when I walked up the stairs earlier in the day! :)

Being plain gold around the outside, and the inscription where no one would see it, I wonder if it's a wedding band.

That's what the saying in the inscription sounds like to me.

It's a poesy ring. Basically, a lovers' ring, but not neccessarily given as a wedding band. The idea was that the sentiment was hidden. Worn by both sexes. Lovely thing, that.

Someone I know lost their wedding ring in the rockery and a kind local found it with a metal detector!

Now that's what detecting is all about. To be able to reach back and touch real history can sometimes be overwhelming.
My quest with the ol' detector is a quest for the colonial. I always have to wonder what stories a relic could tell. A relic of our earliest days in this country. It's always a thrill to dig up some coin or relic and realize the last time anyone held it was over 200 years ago.

Davey, that's what they call a posy ring, correct?
