    Thanks! I love a good mystery too! :) I am loving reading suggestions what it could be for! I paid £10 for this and I am thrilled with it! Its different and its pretty. I am due to move house in about 6 weeks so I am looking forward to finding a place in my home for it and having it on show! Sounds like it might be a talking point amongst visitors! haha! I do like to know as much as possible about an old item - would be so great to find out what it actually was and its origin!

    From the new photos, it looks like the wood that the metal feet are mounted on may have been a later addition; and that there may have been 2 shelves inside.

    That said, I don't know what it is, but it's fun to surmise.

    Don't clean and polish it. Do not underestimate the desirability of the original patina. If you polish it, you may reduce the value by a third or more.
