    Hi everyone!

This is my first post so please excuse any accidental faux-pas. So happy to be a part of this community! Was wondering if anyone in this very wise hive-mind might know what this wall-mounted wood and metal piece might have been used for in the past? I think the metal at the top and bottom might be cast iron. The top part has a hole in the center that looks like something used to hang from it, or perhaps a glass hurricane fit in there...something like that.

I'm curious what you guys think! Thank you!

Hi and welcome! I took the liberty of rotating it. The upper portion sort of looks like spoons might hang there and the bottom looks almost like a candle holder. Maybe shots from a few angles might help though someone might know it.

It looks somewhat like the drying racks for lightweight items. There were a number of wood dowels that would fit in the top bracket and when in use would be flipped up to the brackets on top and locked into position. When not in use, the dowels would rest in the upper bracket and assembled in the cup at the base.

Sandra, I think you're right!! I started Googling so I could visualize it and that's gotta be it...thank you so much everyone! I am so glad to know what it was originally used for.

Well done Sandra! I can "see" it, now that you've ID'd it.

They used to be very good sellers.....(complete). Not sure what they bring today (complete of course).

Ah Hah!! I remember a metal version of this from my college days, only it looked like an umbrella without the fabric. Now what held it upright...? Especially when it had its quota of lingerie drifting about?

Just came across this again. In case anyone wonders, who hasn't seen one before, the ones I remember from college were upside down - upside down like an upside down umbrella, and the end of the handle had a big hook to hang from the shower curtain rod, or the standing lamp, or whatever.

    See...I remembered!
