And what age is this portrait? I did not find a signature. The portrait is painted on a board 1.1 cm thick. The size of the portrait is 22 by 18 centimeters.

I have no expertise in this area, but it looks almost as if the image was applied after the wood was damaged.

I think not, where there is damage - there is loss. Although perhaps there were old restorations in the picture? There are suspicions that the varnish was updated, and so on. Perhaps in the photo it seems so. I'll try to make other photos as well.

This is an example of what prompted my comment.

The right hand side of the big scratch or linear dent seems to retain its paint undisturbed.

I have no doubt that the image is old. Perhaps there are some restorations, or even changed the varnish of the portrait. But it is clear that the image is old. I wonder in what century this picture was painted?

How have you identified it as "Dutch?"

    Expect it's the similarity to Rembrandt's self-portrait.

    Looks similar to decoupage.

Does look Northern European. Man in Renaissance costume. But painting is not of that period. Might be late 19th century copy of sumthin'.

Well, the picture is like oil painting on a blackboard.

And why do you think that a copy of the 19th century? Who and why painted such portraits in the 19th century? I could not find the original, if this is a copy. I did not find such a portrait.

Bronwen replied with the original that it copies (and not a very detailed copy).

By the way, they made copies of old Dutch portraits and paintings in the second half of the 18th century. I found similar paintings late 18th century, written in the style of the old Dutch with expertise. That is, experts examined similar paintings in museums. sometimes even such paintings turn out to be originals of the 16-17th centuries. But for some reason, by default, such painting is considered the late 19th century. Why is it interesting?

Not all artists are good artists.
Someone tried to copy the original. Yes there are differences. But the similarities are very much there.

I think different people are pictured here. But the similarity is that these people are men from the same era.

Sorry, but I don’t see any similarities. That man has a mustache, this one doesn't. A little different hairstyle and clothes. A slightly different face.
