Although after all I have bought in the last few weeks, especially last week, I should be shot through the head for even considering buying another thing.

BTW the Tuesday night walk around looks very promising.

Have you considered renting your father's home until it actually becomes necessary to sell it?
That's what we did with my MIL's house. The rental supplemented what she had coming in from retirement benefits. In the meantime the housing prices continued to creep up. When my husband's family finally sold it, the price had gone up substantially.

 

Well I've never sold a junk drawer lot but I've bought a few. I've been pleased with them but I only bought for the silver in them really and most of the rest I just gave away.

My MIL just passed but had moved into a care facility for the last 6 months. My SIL has been in charge of things and said something I hadn't been aware of. She said that if my MIL's house was unoccupied for over a year she wouldn't be able to able to get insurance on it anymore, some sort of regulation. I don't know if that's an issue where you are but might be worth checking out.

I've sold a few small ones here and there, mostly to clear random bits not worth much on their own but too cool to toss.

Actually, it's pretty standard among US insurance companies.

Vacancy (often after as few as 60 days) can void much of the coverage under a homeowner's-type policy. Companies also make a distinction between VACANT and UNOCCUPIED. You really need to check with a good insurance agent about that!

Special vacancy policies are available, but often only thru a specialty market, and at a much, much higher price. In addition, vacancy policies tend to offer VERY limited types of coverage - often only for events like fire and wind damage, but not for vandalism, water damage due to frozen pipes, glass breakage and many other things.

It really IS an issue that needs to be discussed with your insurance agent.

The ones from the 30s sell nicely.
