The material is metal. I think it's iron, but could be bronze as well I guess...

You could try sticking a magnet to it. If it sticks, it's typically some type of ferrous metal, like cast iron.

 

I'm liking johnny's suggestion that it is meant to dress up a tissue box.

It could be. But it could be other materials as well. i.e. brass, aluminum (it would be relatively light for its size), zinc alloy, etc.

If you're not opposed to doing so, you can make a tiny test scratch on the inside where nobody would notice and look at it with a magnifying glass. The idea is to see what color you come up with. If you're inclined to such a test, make it small, and in an inconspicuous area. Maybe wait for more ideas, in terms of age, before you proceed.

 

From upper edge. looks to me like some kind of white metal with a coating meant to mimic bronze.

 

The bottom photo is a bit out of focus, but two of the feet look like they're a silver/white metal, too. Almost look like they're drilled out...

 

As usual, INH nails it. I had wondered why the opening in the top was so rough & not perfectly round. Maybe sculpture has a tab that goes through that extra bit on one side that holds it in place when piece is turned into proper orientation.
