After polishing, one can see "Parnell's Patent" on the left side, "52 Strand London" on the right and "National 449" in the center. I found a London Daily News archive from 1855 mentioning a Parnell company at that address; as for "National" I reckon that's a lock type (I found other references to a "Defiance" lock with Parnell Patent), and 449 perhaps a serial number.
