The big Annual Community Garage Sale here is tomorrow and I went to a few "warm up sales" this morning. Only spent $1.25 on nothing important.

But my big Find of the Day was a 1845 death notice for a multi-great grandmother whose first name I never knew (until now.) She was 97 years old, God bless her.

I've been looking for anything at all about her for years!

No - not at a garage sale. That would be too freaky by half!

I have been chatting by email with another Ancestry member who commented on a related part of my tree that we have in common - sharing "mysteries" that need solving among other things. She has been a "boots on the ground" researcher for a long time and very involved in various efforts to collect information on the pre-Revolutionary War population of Long Island, I gather. So when I brought up "mystery" grandmother she looked in her own database and said she had a mention of a "Nancy" of the right surname whose death was published in a Suffolk County newspaper on a particular day of 1845. And she told me how to find that paper online - nyshistoricnewspapers.org.

Knowing exactly what day to look for saved a lot of time! And the article, though brief, gave enough details to know that she was definitely the right person!

My find of the day was a set of Pyrex storage and microwave containers. They're the old one cup size with the blue cornflowers ... with the lids. I paid $5 for the stack just to get the lids. The little handled whatsits turn up ever so often, but you can never find the danged lids, and mine are a mess. The earrings were a surprise in a box lot of mystery jewelry I bought on another website. I thought at best they'd be gilt sterling, if not brass and plastic; they're angel skin coral and ... 18k, with full Italian hallmarks. Whoops!

The ancestry find was great, too.

I couldn't get up again, still recovering, went out later for a little bit. I did find two pairs of 14k gold earrings (one just the simple gold balls you use for ear piercing and the other some fatter hoops) and a sterling bangle (newer stuff) in a bag marked $3.

I found these at a thrift shop a few weeks ago. I never knew wood could be chatoyant like this.... the "eyes" are honey-colored.


And it is amazing what people throw out. Great find on a sterling flatware set in the trash, and great curbside free furniture!

 

Can anybody venture a guess on what type of wood these beads may be?

Been some time since I've posted. Here are a few recent, random finds.

Hollow glass bird - ?penguin, Cloisonne ginger jar, figural mug, Li'l Abner, I think, Mack Trucks glass dish, lucite Star thing - whose logo is that? The back has a lot of carp about providing Star Service, but no company name.


St. Basil's Cathedral Moscow building replica, Hubley P-38 fighter.

Most 14K, one ring 10K (watchband is stainless). And strangely enough all picked up really late in the day.


Desk lamp, looks cool, but a weird design with the bulb showing below the shade.

Same around here Marko. I was shocked, and all pretty cheap. These were found a little off the beaten path, but both sales looked like they has been well attended.

 

It does happen. Sometimes people just miss it.
