    The inlaid marble like pieces are painted wooden balls.

    Bev aka thelmasstuff Colored pencil artist extraordinaire ;)

    I had a set of kitchen chairs with rush seats in this style. Unless you use cushions, those posts sticking up in the front are darned painful. I couldn't wait to get rid of them. Mine didn't have the painted ball decorations, though.
