Hi, I have what I think is a French Empire gilt bronze clock. Could anyone help me identify it?

It's 18.5" tall (to the top of the woman's head) and 13" at the widest point of the base.

Sometimes if you remove the bell, you might find a foundry or manufacturing stamp. It is fairly easy to do.

Not a clock guy, but the figure looks like Demeter, the Olympian goddess of the harvest and agriculture.

    Could also call her Ceres.

Almost certainly French, though whether early or later 19th Century is beyond my "expertise." I would guess early though. As someone else said, removal of the bell might reveal a maker's mark.

I was thinking the same that the colour looks a little weird. Makes me think of something that was spray painted.

In case anyone was wondering why the goddess of grain & the harvest would have a torch, it is not for crop burning. It is an allusion to the time she was going up & down the land searching for her abducted daughter Persephone/Proserpina, when the world was plunged into unrelenting winter.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

@EmilyM ,the original poster, has not been back for almost a year. Maybe she will get a notice that I tagged her.
