    Tying up some loose ends:

The J Roybal stuff is based on a real artist: Graciela Boulanger. She's from Bolivia and still alive age 86. Her stuff is quite similar, but she's a real artist. Ive managed to find two of her originals and they sold quickly. Very good name to know.

On Joyce Roybal: this is the first I've heard of Joyce Roybal. I took a quick look in a data base and it looks exactly like the J Roybal stuff. My guess is that's its the same factory work from China.

If you google Roybal you will find various stories. Some say its a he some say its a she. Some say he's from California. Some say she's from Mexico. But you never see a picture you never see him/her at a gallery. just weird stuff.

I feel strongly that Joyce Roybal is the same made up thing. If you go on the askart website, it's very confusing and not very helpful. It starts by asking who is Joyce Roybal and then immediately starts talking about "J Roybal" and its factory art. Not really explaining if that is a connection or just a coincidence.

The article then concludes even more cryptically with a biographical piece on Joyce Roybal from the "archives." not explaining if this is bogus or real or what.

Very strange. Like I said I think Joyce is just as fake as J.

No that's not how it really works.

Many factory works use initials and/or common surnames. You might see: "B Waters" or "L Simmons" or "J Louis"

My guess is and it seems obvious, that they dont want to be accused of being outright forgeries. So they have a truck full of 500 "L Simmons" and who can say which guy that is? Its just someone with the initial L, it's not the famous artist.

The most common one I see, aside from Roybal is "Antonio." SOmetimes with an initial. "Somers" is also a common factory painting.

"Lee Reynolds" is a real artist who had a factory! At one pt. it was the greatest factory art in the world. He would go to Europe and hang out with PIcasso and bring back master works and have his guys make similar stuff. SOme of the stuff is good, but it usually doesn't get much money. A few of them go $300.

We had a Home Goods opening near us a few years ago. All my female colleagues were so excited...I had never been in one, so I was excited, too, until I saw what they sold. I am always the odd person out where I am. Thank goodness for you guys.

Bwahaha. I am trying to learn about art. Yesterday, I saw a beautiful watercolor in a perfect lightwood frame for $3.50 in a thrift shop. All it was signed was M C. I googled for hours.... turns out it is a reproduction of a self-portrait of Mary Cassatt. I probably saw it in person at the National Gallery of Art....but still a bargain for what I paid. I knew I loved it for a reason.
