    Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

    OK, @Jeff Drum, so in the 4th image down, when you click it, you can see the crazing of an old finish......how would you plan to get by that to be able to bring out its beauty???? Which, BTW, I think it's perfectly simple and LOVELY!!!! But somehow, I'd want to get by that old crazed finish!!!!

    If it was cloudy or water stained then I could see the point. But that surface doesn't bother me at all, and doesn't cover up or detract from the appearance in my opinion. If you clean it to remove the old wax, then apply a new coat of shiny wax on the surface, you'll fix any issues I see. I'm used to living with antiques so maybe I have different expectations?

    (BTW I hate it when I write a post and then it immediately disappears on the previous page where no one will read it. Don't have a solution, but GRRR...)

    I personally have no problem going back and forth on the pages to read OR re-read a post.....especially when it has GOOD info!!!!! Yours did!!!

    Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

    When you go to a thread that you've previously read, it starts you off with the first unread post. Doesn't matter if it's in a previous page of the thread. So, you should be fine, @Jeff Drum !

    So, I didn't intend to make this thread about some ARShow appraisers...really, I have nothing against them. I hope we can restore this thread to the original piece. I may be able to get some more/better pics over Thanksgiving weekend. If there is still interest, I'll update then. Until then, I appreciate the education/advice given from the relevant responses.

    Threads always meander, but that doesn't mean people aren't interested in your beautiful item. They are, and would love to see more photos.

    Information that goes further than the item in question adds to the learning we all want to do here. There is always a bigger picture, and it is good to be made aware of pitfalls.

    I totally agree with you.
    A good cleaning and waxing should restore this piece.
    Stripping with that inlay may actually damage it.

    I would try an orange oil to clean.
    Try a small area on one of the back legs first.

    @verybrad for other cleaning suggestions.

    What I see on the drawer is termed alligatoring. It occurs due to exposure to cycles of temperature extremes. The only way to get rid of it is to refinish. On the other hand, it is indicative of age and many do not mind its presence. As above, a good cleaning and a coat of wax will improve appearance. Since you have some delicate inlays, I hesitate to suggest soap and water as I would with most projects. The orange oil is probably a good method. Alternately, there are commercial furniture cleaning products on the market. Extreme wax build up can quickly be cut with mineral spirits if necessary. It will dull the finish if used but this should disappear with a new coat of wax.
