Hello to all my favorite experts!
I found this huge serving spoon today at the antique mall for $10. I just had a gut feeling about it.
It passes the acid test around 925. I have no idea how much it weighs, because it was more than my gram scale could handle. My scale maxes out at 100g., And this item caused it to say "over load".
The amazing thing is that it is faintly etched on the back with "THR 1769".
My question is....Could it really be that old?

I can't find anything online that matches HCB as a maker's mark.
I will take it to my local NA jeweler's supply shop, and if I ask nicely, they will weigh it for me on their scale. They sell sterling to local Native jewelers, so I think their scales are accurate.

I took lots of photos, but because it is so big and curvy, I really couldn't capture the real essence of it.

What do all of you think about age? Is it American? Is it a stew spoon?
It is worn a bit thin on one edge of the bowl where a right handed person used it for a whole lot of stirring from the bottom of the pot!
Thank you in advance for any and all replies!

It's a spoon for a giant! It would also make a good weapon.

ditto Kyra- the weight alone ! best of luck tracing the history.
antique malls are where it's at-better odds (unless you've got a very solid arrangement w/ an estate agent, probate lawyer, thrift mgr).

    I'm glad you think so!
I'm all giddy just thinking about all the hands who held it in the past!

Thanks for the search term! I just looked at stuffing spoons, so I'm keeping that description in mind as I search.

Stracci-Couldn't agree more.Thrift stores are great for clothes on Senior Half-Off Days.Deals on quality garments for 1/4 or less than Poshmark ,but for Antiques-YUK !
...might's well stay at home & clean the cat box.
PS-This is my experience, others find amazing stuff at Thrifts,it's just a matter of split-second timing.Oh-and Thrift Store prices for anything at all interesting are going way up (a run of the mill Beam Bottle for 40 bucks ?).

I question how it could be made of sterling silver, could be that long (14.5 inches) and weigh over 100 gr. No assay or national mark? Like I said, skeptical.

You were going to take it somewhere to see if you could get a weight. Did that happen?
