Grain painted bureau - help on age

2. Measurements: 38.5" width, 35" height, 17" depth

Grain painted bureau that's been in customer's family for years. I reglued the drawers and am curious of the age and provenance. All joints appear to be hand cut and nails appear old. Not sure about the finish as denatured alcohol and lacquer thinner did not soften it. It's possible someone put polyurethane over the old finish.

I'd love to hear your thoughts!

 

I'd switch up the 2nd and 3rd drawers.........

Without a label of some sort it’s extremely difficult to say who would have made this. Any provenance questions as to who might have owned this and when are best answered by the owner.

The grain painting is unusual. Although there are few stylistic clues, I’d say this was made ca. 1870.

 

That was the first thing I thought of, too, when I saw the photo. I agree that the grain painting direction on the drawers should be "every other"... an undulating back and forth pattern would make for a much more interesting display. How unique!
