Today I would like to show you a brooch that still belonged to my grandmother (1894-1962).
The brooch is probably gold plated and the topaz is radiantly cut. I don't know if this is a real topaz.
The pin shows an engraving that is completely a mystery to me
The brooch measures 56 mm. and the stone 9 mm. - 13 mm.
I would like it if anyone can tell more about this brooch.
In which period it was made, etc.

Do you think you could get a clearer image of the text/mark?

The type of clasp/catch appears to indicate your grandmother would have acquired it in the latter part of her life.
    Very pretty!

Could be late 30s, Jeanny is in the Netherlands. In those days jewellery fashions often started a bit earlier here in Europe. And by the 1940s Europeans had other things on their minds.:(
It is a beauty, Jeanny. The stone could be an aquamarine, but it is best to have it tested (when corona has passed :nailbiting:).
Can you read the marking with a loupe? I suspect it is German made, and by a good company.

    Hi Any Jewelry
I tried to read it with a loupe, but i also failed. I can no longer enlarge the images, it just becomes more unclear :)

Hi Jeanny. I only just noticed the little Limburg flag in the corner of you Dutch flag. Yay! A while back I defended the honour of your province against another Antiquers member who kept insisting Limburg is in Germany and you all speak German.
Aquitaine cropped and enlarged your photo. So it is part of your brooch pin.:)

Yes, I was hoping one was a "little" better than the other....I'm wondering if they are a different language??? OR can you take another picture in good light, but no flash or direct sunshine??? It tends to wash out what's there too much!!

Regardless, I think the brooch is lovely!!!!:happy:

I am completely fascinated by this brooch.
But I also notice that I can not find this design or something similar on the internet.

It does, in the sense that it is proof that it is a German brooch.:)
Oresto is an old name for a certain quality rolled gold (doublé). It is the third one in this list (sorry guys, in German):

"Ferner gibt es noch teils geschützte, Teils ungeschützte und teils vollkommen veraltete Markenbezeichnungen, wie z.B.:
    • Goldpfeil 35/000 Mikronauflage
    • Goldvlies 16/000 Mikronauflage
    • Oresto 5/000 Mikronauflage
    • Komet 35/000 Mikronauflage
    • Goldhelm 100 Mikron starke Auflage von 585/000-Gold auf Silber
    • Obergold 37,5 Mikron starke 585/000-Goldauflage auf Tombak
    • Goldfront 25 Mikron starke 585/000-Goldauflage auf Silber
    • Goldgloria 75/000 Mikronauflage
    • Goldanker 10/000 Mikronauflage
    • Goldschild 12,5 Mikron starke 585/000-Goldauflage auf 835/000-Silber

Diese Bezeichnungen finden in erster Linie in Deutschland Anwendung."

Thanks, Jeanny. I can see oresto now, so it is German. Most of the oresto plated jewellery I've seen is 1920s-1930s, so I'll stick with my first idea of late 30s.
It is a beauty, I can see why you like it so much.

    Hi Any Juwelry
I now find more and more information about this design.
I even found another brooch made in the same period.

Around 1900, ORESTO was known for high-quality gilding.
This brooch was indeed made somewhere between 1920 and 1939

With the arrival of the Second World War (1939-1945), the metals became very scarce in Germany, because they had to be handed in for making weapons.
They then switched to silver (I was told)

You were completely right about your assessment. [IMG]

True, and even before that precious metals were very expensive due to the war restitutions Germany had to pay after the first World War, and the Depression of the 30s. Many people would have considered a plated brooch pretty special in those years.

The other brooch you found is also a beauty. I wouldn't be surprised if it was by the same maker as yours.

What a beautiful brooch! I'm glad that you found out who made it, with help from the members here.
