Well, not quite a crow festival. I live in Terre Haute. During the fall and winter the crows feed on the fields over in Illinois in the morning and then fly back across the Wabash River in the evening to roost in our trees. The flocks are huge. As you can imagine the droppings are a real problem. We have cannons that move around town to try and disperse the crows from roosting in one area too long with mixed results. The problem appears to be beyond current technology to solve.

As it happens we have a jazz festival in late summer. The planners of this year's festival designed a poster featuring a crow under a tree playing a banjo to try and capitalize on our rather dubious distinction regarding the crows. After its unveiling the poster was perceived by some as racist. It caused quite a stir and the city Human Relations committee got involved. Meetings were held. The poster was revised with the crow and the banjo gone but crows flying in the background. However, the revision was also viewed as problematic so the image went in another direction entirely. There were the appropriate apologies and it was chalked up as unintentional and as a learning experience. This area of Indiana has a lot to answer as regards our race relations. The Ku Klux Klan was headquartered in the county just north of here for many years and, while the city is about 10% black, the counties surrounding us are nearly all white. I'm going to stop here as I can go on for quite some time regarding Indiana and its relations with its minority communities. Anyway, the jazz festival will proceed but I don't envision a crow festival here anytime in the near future.
