How difficult would it be to replace the mirror? I think the little frame is really nice.

Is the frame made of Gutta Percha, as it appears to be...or just deeply tarnished silver?

It's metal. I thought it was pot metal but now you mention it I should see if it polishes!! Didn't occur to me it might be silver. I've started going through boxes in the attic from flea market days. I used to just buy lots to resell and anything like this just got stuck in a box.

It's likely silverplate; they made a gazillion in the Netherlands with that pattern on the back.

This is why I love this group. I did some polishing and what a difference! I can also read Denmark on the bottom right. I don't see any silver marks, but it sure looks better! There's also a little fish symbol below the name.

Looks like it's a Hans Jensen. Now I'm really sorry it's broken. :(

The mirror glass is bevelled too, even more difficult to replace

Yes...but t least it's round. Ovals are a horse of a different color, I've found; aspect ratio has to be spot-on, or you can spot the poor fit from a block away.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

LOVE THAT MIRROR!!!!! And from your last enlargement, I'm wondering if, where I've circled in RED, there might be some lettering in there.....I'm frequently wrong, but maybe worth a strong magnifier on it might be worth it????? Personally, I'd check with my jeweler about replacing the mirror.....they might work with the metal easier!!??

Can't get a good look but if the mirror is under the frame then you may have to pry the edge to get it out. If also be glued...dunno what kind, but I'd try alcohol and then acetone to loosen it. Do a bit of droppering it into the breaks or crevasses to roll around under it.

If you can't find a good blank to replace it, local glass sellers may also sell mirror they can cut to fit. Beveling is more. I think you'll find a blank just fine but it's good to know for future projects.

    It says Denmark.;)
Silverplate "Dutch" scenes were usually made in Germany. The US made their fair share of Olde Dutch inspired items as well.

It was the time of Hollandmania, which meant that people in the industrial cities in other countries loved the perceived simplicity of life as portrayed in Dutch paintings.

Nice hand mirror. I love bevelled glass. Not that I'm recommending this method, but I'd probably try to break the glass more and see if I could remove it piece by piece. See why I don't fix things? :D

I'd have to break it to get it out, but then I would also have to bend back the bezel to fit a new one inside. All put on hold while we go on vacation this week. ;)
