No worries. Where you're concerned I'll keep any daft ideas to myself henceforth. Sorry to offend.

Hi Tom, Not offended, it was just a bit of a letdown to see someone had replied, which i thought would be "the answer" and instead was just nonsense !

Can you post photo of the grooves inside the circle with better light?
Also, you mentioned that this belonged to your brother? Maybe tell us a little about what he collected, his interests, where he lived/traveled.
This forum is filled with curious, knowledgeable people, hopefully someone can help.
It’s not unusual for folks to post random, sometimes funny comments. For some(me included) it’s a quiet place to spend some time, learn a few things, be mildly amused/entertained.
So often I see something that’s a complete mystery to me and see it solved within a minutes/posts...but not every time.
If your item doesn’t get identified here and you do end up figuring it out I hope that you check back in and let us know.

I think your wedge slides into a slot. after that one of two things (I think) could happen 1) it provides a hole to slide rope or bar of metal to hold in place.or 2) as Tom mckay said the wedge slides into very large slotted screw and a bar can be slipped through and turned to provide leverage. we are talking industrial usage here. The edges of your wedge are clipped probably to allow it to slide into slot easier. Notice the wear on the outer side of your ring, that is not on both sides Why? As was mentioned, bronze is used to avoid electrical sparks around gas lines . I have sold many beryllium bronze wrenches for high prices. try thinking of you item flipped 180 bronze donut.JPG
