Hi, I just wanted to say hello, and tell you that I'm from the UK and interested in old photos, which I have a growing collection of. I'm looking forward to sharing some of my finds, and reading about others. Bye for now!

Oh boy.... You shouldn't have told us UK... ;)
Welcome! Can't wait to see what you are collecting! It sounds like just about anything but do you have particular genre you like? One of mine is 'yard longs' but unless unusual they are US Navy related such as sailors in uniform and also ships.

Hi, and thanks for your message! I research my family history, so I love any images that have a story to tell. Mostly portraits so far (CDVs/cabinet cards). I enjoy trying to identify them. I've picked up a few Victorian notebook/albums along the way, too... again, I like to research the people. One of the albums had some old letters in, which I reunited with family members in Australia!

I'm happy to offer help from the UK, if I can... I don't know much about 'yard longs' though, but look forward to learning ;-)

Hi! Excellent work and fun too!
Did you hear about the woman here who was finding photographs after hurricane Sandy? She literally has a photographic memory. She traveled around searching for lost photos while looking for these people and found some of them! She was so good at it people were sending the photos they found to her!
'Yard longs' are a misnomer but it covers the genre. A 'yard' here is 3 feet. It seems that no yard longs are ever 3'. I have them from about 15" to 61" or so in length. Here is one>

Oh, I see now... were they taken with wide angle lenses? My dad (87) has one from his time in the airforce, a smaller one of about 20" in length.

It's a shame to lose photos/memories, so I admire the woman you described. What a nice thing to do!

Welcome, Batman -- I love collecting photos, too -- and also do some genealogical research. Check out the Ephemera and Photographs forum here, if you haven't already. There are more and more posts here that will be of interest.
