That's a very interesting observation, Spring. I doubt that anyone without military weapons expertise would have seen that.

Now, back to my "theatrical" suggestion. I truly believe this was taken on a silent movie set. Late teens, early twenties, a movie with a "war" setting. I don't think that's Chaplin, though.

"Charlie's" watch give any rough timeframe? Shape of watch case is a bit unusual. Is Charlie cleaning a rifle? Could be the dark vertical object near his right hand. Upper end of object sure looks like a rifle muzzle with sling swivel just below it. Mercenaries? Insurgents? Commandos? But the knowledge that the card back format means 1920's kinda eliminates the WWII possibility.

Here's another pic of a type 99, real one this time, first pic was a non gun replica. Not sure what else that thing in lower left corner of OP's RPPC could be but any opinions welcome. It isn't a door-knocker though.

I think the mustached guy is Chaplin after looking at Google images of him. The hair, nose, eyebrows and mustache look right to me.

I agree that it's probably from a silent film set.

It's the little known Chaplin version of Erich Maria Remarques 'All Quiet on the Western Front, set in Turkey and played for laughs. It is mainly famous, since it failed abysmally as both drama and comedy, for many years later, inspiring the designer of a Japanese machine gun to add a little swivelly leg thing to the stock of his design. No one ever found a use for it.

    Allegedly.

Anyone who thinks it is Chaplin might test the theory on one of the many various Chaplin Facebook pages. Just post the photo and ask. Easier to post photos there than here. See what percentage of replies agree. I don't have an opinion, I don't count face-matching among my strengths.

    Interesting pic! >Chaplin version ......<

    Adding my laugh.

That might be a fishing reel next to the rifle butt at the lower left. This may be a hunting/fishing trip in the evening with the participants getting their gear ready for the next day??? Like someone has mentioned, the guides might be the 2 men on our left wearing the hats. Those 2 men have an Asian Minor appearence in apparel, hats and shirts/jackets, & the smoking of a hookah, waterpipe.

    Just adding my 2¢.

Hmmm-they musta been hunting for snow monkeys with that machine gun-those things can get pretty aggressive and might gang up on a small party of monkey hunters. Can't blame 'em for wanting to be prepared. Thing that might be a fishing reel might also be a Brit hand grenade called a "Mills bomb," also an effective AMW (anti-monkey weapon.). Use of grenades against gangs of monkeys has declined in recent years due to the apparently learned behavior on the part of the monkeys to catch the grenades and throw them back, resulting in disasterous conclusions to several monkey hunts.

On the one hand, I think it really does look like Chaplin sans the heavy makeup he wore in movies. On the other hand, I couldn't find any evidence of his doing any movies where this scene would make sense.

It's not likely to be a shot from his travels, either, since apparently Chaplin only wore the mustache in films.

It looks like we don't have any more of an idea than the person who originally posted it. It was posted on a Facebook site for RPPC.
