That's one heck of an opium pipe! I bet not too many people made it out of the house it was used in and tried to drive home!!

To me this is a Chinese water pipe used for smoking tobacco.
While these are commonly called opium pipes , a learned discussion will regularly come to the conclusion that this finding is in question.

Below, it does say"or opium", but I would not want to store my opium that way....

That looks much more like a bosn's whistle to me.
And the only I know about poppies is that I buy them on Veteran's Day.

I'd have said that was a bosun's whistle too. Seen enough of them.

My husband has a bosun's whistle. That is certainly what it is. His is put away, but here's a pic I found on a Navy website:

As far as the OPs item, people seem to forget that tobacco was smoked through water to eliminate harshness and water pipes are common. Not every pipe was used for other drugs (other than nicotine)

& that IS what it is.......how could a South Carolina auction house make such a glaring mistake??......well cuz folks make mistakes all the time & the web just posts what it sees and magnifies the error by turning it into repeated fact.

Tobacco was smoked along with the use of opium , so the OP's style of water pipe is often seen together with opium pipes and paraphernalia in old photos, thus linking them to the smoking of opium........
