    Hi,

New member here who would really like some help. We are clearing out my parents home and found this. We believe it may have come from India/Afghanistan at some point.

    Thanks!!

    Komokwa - thanks very much.

Do we have any idea of age, were they used for close combat or were they decorative, any value, if there is a collectors market, etc? it does not have any sentimental value for us, but would like to know more about it.

The decoration of the sheath suggests at ceremonial....but at the same time the construction hints at personal defense....
    What size is it ...please!!!

    Yes there's a market
    & yes...there's value there....as far as I can tell....

the other side of the sheath may give a clue as to how it was worn...

Very Good Dagger from West Africa, Bissagos Islands (??) - 13139

This very good dagger is coming from west Africa. Mid 20 C. and of good quality. Curved blade 7 ½ inches long of flat diamond cross section with 1 inch ricasso. Black horn and bone handle and brass / copper scabbard. Total length 12 ½ inches. Very good condition. Sharpening and grinding signs on the blade. A similar dagger in the British Museum is described as coming from the Bissagos ( Bijagos) Islands, a group of islands off the coast of Guinea – Bissau, but the attribution to these islands is questionable.

    ( thank you Oriental Arms...)

Thanks! The examples you have found look exactly the same. Dimensions are listed above but here they are again:

Overall length is 10", blade 1" at widest part, 5" long blade with a 5 3/4" sheath.

I'll be interested to see what the one sells for in the auction on May 18th.

    I'm familiar with it now.......!:happy::happy::happy:

Yes, Phil , the size is there.....I just didn't realize I'd seen it in my quest to find you the proper information !! :(:rolleyes:

If the mid 20th cent date sticks....It's no antique.....but it's a good vintage & these seem to be very well made.

Funny that the auction is only days away......
sometimes you get lucky like that.!

Thanks....let's see if the right eyes are on that auction !!
