Can you help me identify a modern vase left by my parents? It is cased glass & looks mid-century modern to me, but I assume MCM style can be repeated in later glass. The inside is a translucent white that can look opaque when photographing. The bottom has concentric circles around a central small circle. Is that the pontil mark? 6.75 inches H, 4.75 inches W.

No surviving labels, & I see no signature/maker's mark. I found several similar pieces on ebay (different proportions), but I have doubts about the seller's descriptions. One evokes Swedish/Danish influence & Carlo Moretti (Murano/Italy) in the same sentence, & the other calls it amberina (which it clearly is not). Prices vary widely too. How can I learn the artist or manufacturer, national or regional origin, date, value, etc.?

(I know this is not an antique, but probably vintage, so I hoped someone would know--or point me in the right direction. I will get to "the old stuff" eventually. My father had a cut glass collection--beautiful, but I am ignorant. Because of maker's marks I have been able to ID much--but not all--of my mother's china collection myself.)

A pontil or punt mark is from breaking off the punt stick during a hand blowing process. It usually looks like a broken roundish spot unless it has been ground off, which usually leaves a lil matte spot or a bump/divot. If it's perfect circle lines then that would be from a mold.

E bay descriptions were always untrustworthy from everyone copying and using someone else's keywords, but now they are a complete and utter wasteland because of the new AI description writing "feature". With the click of a button you too can have an actual garbage dump word salad to impress and baffle your buyers! :wacky:

If a description seems nonsensical it's because it's the AI and no one bothered editing it. I see it on like 1/3 to 1/2 of the auctions I look at daily, and the rest have hit the "Sell One Like This" button and copy pasted their terms in the space.

I had a 'cased' vase that still had the Made in China sticker on it. Never rule out China!

Excellent. I will start looking for "Empoli glass."

Incidentally, the first Empoli glass web site I encountered has a large large bottle with stopper which looks a lot like one I inherited (but a different color). I do believe in research serendipity.

I thought the sellers were either ignorant/mistaken or (occasionally) lying to enhance the value of the piece. I try to assume the former. I undoubtedly will make/have made mistakes too--but not deliberately. But using AI is horrifying--sheer laziness & not caring about accuracy. That certainly explains a number of descriptions with no/little content.

Yes, a blue one. There were two but one was broken. I had no idea what it was.

Everybody here knows I pretty much hate all gen ai (automated AI is different and useful), but if a seller is going to use the AI description button they should REALLY edit it because you leave yourself open to buyers disputing everything that's wrong.

However, I think the editing process would take longer than just stringing a couple sentences together yourself from scratch. :meh: Makes you sound like a lovely seller I'd want to interact with too.

Just selling my parents' belongings from their estate (and deciding what to keep). The money goes to my son. I have learned a lot, especially about my mother's china, but am definitely an amateur.

I am not sure - sometimes 'new' glass will have a greasy feel which I usually equate to China. I don't think Tango/Czech/bohemian would have a cased white interior. Mold made so likely mass produced. It would be fun to have a bunch of different colors.

You do get some older cased bohemian glass. And mould blown too.

I just didn't see any wear on the base in photo. I assumed it was contemporary.

Empoli is tough stuff, I’ve had a fair few seventies bits which looked totally clean on the base.
