    Hello all,
Dont see a lot of value here but would love to know the story behind this item. At first I thought it possibly was a lunch pail, but find the inside VERY rough for food content. Metal seems to be tin(possibly) with a copper plating outside that is scratched off alot. Rough tooling on primitive decorative parts and has absolutely no company marking inside or out. The two pins screw into the lower section to tighten lids. It is about 10” tall by 7” wide.

Hoping this is an easy ID for someone and as stated above, would love to know the possible dating, provenance and story behind this piece.

    Thank you for looking

    It's called a tiffin-carrier or tiffin box.

"Tiffin" is an old, Victorian-era English slang-word meaning "snack" or "lunch".

The bowls contain rice, vegetables, meat, curry, whatever...and they're stacked up and braced together in a frame to stop them from mixing around. Then when it's time to eat, you pull the whole thing apart and chow down.

They're usually made of brass, or enameled steel. Cheap ones are made of aluminum. Modern ones are made of insulated plastic, or stainless steel.

The shape of this one, together with the handles/finials of the side bars, looks Turkish to me.

As alway, a very big THANK YOU(all) for the right words to search. So I was originally correct in thinking it to be a lunch box(2points for me :) ), but OMG, they are very rough on the inside. Would it be safe to say mid 20th C? Or later? With no markings, were these made by individuals for themselves? It doesn't look manufactured.

Bought at a yard sale cheap.

    Not good for food.:(
Turkey has had a thriving fake antiques industry for decades. Greece also used to fake a lot of copper and brass items, including Ottoman styles. I don't know if they still do. Anyway, this could be a vintage fake.:playful:

I have a genuine brass and tin-plated tiffin carrier, made in India about 1900. The interior of that is perfectly smooth. I mean, it has to be, right? You're gonna eat out of it...
